Face to Faith to be Developed Across Indonesia

The Tony Blair Faith Foundation is to work with Indonesian schools on a pioneering education programme that aims to help prevent religious prejudice, conflict and extremism.

Tony Blair was in Jakarta to sign an agreement with the Indonesian National Committee for UNESCO on behalf of the Faith Foundation. He also attended a roundtable meeting with teachers and took part in a videoconference between Indonesian and Indian students taking part in the programme at a Senior High School in south Jakarta.

The Tony Blair Faith Foundation's Face to Faith programme, designed for 12-17 year olds, uses the latest technology to connect students with their peers all over the world. The programme equips young people with some of the key knowledge and skills needed to secure an open-minded society at ease with difference. In the first stage teachers in schools from across Indonesia will receive training on how to deliver the programme.

Tony Blair, Patron and Founder of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation said:

"Our prospects for peace rely on helping our young people become a generation at ease with difference, global citizens who would like an open-minded society. I am delighted that my Foundation is to develop this programme across Indonesia, a country that has led the way in championing diversity and community cohesion.

"We are seeing daily the terrible consequences of religiously motivated extremism. This is a profound global challenge and to defeat it we have to challenge their ideology.

"There is an urgent need to reform our education systems so that they teach children to recognise how they can positively take part in our connected world. By showing them what they have in common with those from other cultures they can better resist the prejudices of those religious extremists who seek to distort the truth."
