Dr. Lisa Watanabe is a senior researcher at the Center for Security Studies of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. Before joining the Center for Security Studies in 2013, she was a research fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Studies. She is co-author of Critical Turning Points in the Middle East: 1915–2015 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), and has authored book chapters on the emergence of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), and on religion, ethnicity and state formation in Algeria. She also regularly contributes articles, policy papers and opinion pieces on North Africa following the Arab uprisings.

While the events of the 'Arab Spring' had limited impact on Algeria, the country remains at the centre of violent Islamist extremism in the Magreb and Sahel regions. Lisa Watanabe examines the evolution of extremist groups in the Algeria, and looks at the implications for national and regional stability.
