al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is the most prominent Islamist militant group in Algeria, and its activities extend to neighbouring countries of the Sahara and Sahel region. The group aims to establish an Islamic state in the region, and has focused on the kidnapping and ransom of foreigners as a means to raise income. The group was formerly known as the Groupe Salafiste pour la Prédication et le Combat (GSPC), and many of its members were formerly active in the Groupe Islamique Armé (GIA), a violent Islamist group that fought against the government during the Algerian civil war in the 1990s.
