U Wirathu is a prominent Buddhist monk in Myanmar, who has become the public face of the Buddhist nationalist movement known as '969'.
Described on the front cover of TIME magazine as "The Face of Buddhist Terror", he travels throughout the country preaching sermons, which focus on "protecting" Buddhism from the rise of Islam. In October 2014, he travelled to Sri Lanka to develop co-operation with the Sri Lankan group Bodu Bala Sena. He has also expressed admiration for the English Defence League. In 2003, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for inciting violence against Muslims, but was released in 2010 and has been very active since then. He is based in Mandalay.
